From The President’s Desk

Holy Smoke, I mean Smog.

We are all seeing what Delhi has come to. Schools shut, visibility down, health emergency declared, will Delhiites have to be evacuated to some safe haven?

But the purpose of this note is not about Delhi situation, its about learning from it. While we are fortunate not to have a lot of ills causing the smog in Delhi like burning of fields around it, the government must come out with guidelines for Mumbai citizens how to avoid falling into a similar trap in coming months and years. There is no point beginning the planning after we too are engulfed. One of the worst offenders in Mumbai are cars and motorcycles on our jammed roads. Also the fires that are lit by people living in hutments, in the winter months which are round the corner.

Lets wake up before its late, too late .

6. Below is an article on Servant Leadership by one of our Boardroom Member-Dr. Wilfred Monteiro

SERVANT LEADERSHIP IN BUSINESS: TO RULE IS TO SERVE

Servant Leadership is a timeless concept ; a legacy from the holy books & teaching of the sages; however in modern times the phrase “servant leadership” in the business context ; was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in The Servant as Leader, an essay that he first published in 1970. In that essay, Greenleaf said:

“THE SERVANT-LEADER IS SERVANT FIRST…
it begins with the natural feeling that one
wants to serve, to serve first.
then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.
that person is sharply different from one who is leader first,
perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive
or to acquire material possessions…
the leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types.
between them there are shadings and blends
that are part of the infinite variety of human nature.”

A servant-leader essential is DIFFERENT from the usual business leaders who are driven by personal gain, organization betterment etc. A servant leader focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of people and the communities/groups to which they belong.. The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is:
  • Do those served grow as persons?
  • Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?
  • And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived?“
All servant leaders share two fundamental beliefs about the people they lead, and engage in a few distinct practices that put these beliefs into action.

Servant leaders believe that...
1. Every person has value and deserves civility, trust, and respect
2. People can accomplish much when inspired by a purpose beyond themselves

Somehow servant leadership has many appear to have similarities with the commonly used terms -transformational and charismatic leadership; as both are inspirational and moral. While transformational leadership will lead to an empowered, action-oriented culture; servant leadership culture is associated with an attitude of equality fraternity and a paternalistic care and concern for the welfare of followers... the leaders is an integral part of those who are led.

HOW SERVANT LEADERSHIP WORKS

Since the concept of servant leadership was introduced by Robert Greenleaf in 1977, some researchers have succeeded to develop the characteristics of servant leadership. Here are some top characteristics:

1. EQUALITY NOT POWER CENTRED
The most important principle of Servant leadership is to be first among equals: a leader who does not use his power to getting this done for organization but who tries to persuade and convince staff. Servant leaders depend less on organizational power and control while they try to shift authority to the followers While traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid,” servant leadership is different. The servant-leader shares power, puts the needs of others first and helps people develop and perform as highly as possible.

2. DISPLAY STEWARDSHIP
A real willingness to take responsibility for the larger organization cause and to go for service instead of control and self-interest; therefore holding something in trust and serving the needs of others; Servant leaders are not motivated by motivation of power, but motivation to serve others . The identification of followers needs; helps to persuade and influence since they did not use their power to force or legitimate something. They intended to serve what the followers need and lead them. Leading and serving becomes exchangeable. Being a servant allows a person to lead; being leaders implies a person serves.

3. VISIONARY & THOUGHT LEADER
The sheer commitment of the Servant Leader for the long term; prevents the short sighted polices and hasty action to improve results for the “next quarter” This according to Robert Greenleaf results in using the intuitive mind to understand lessons from the past, the realities of the present, and the likely consequence of a decision in the future in order to solve complex problems. So being awake to changing reality & thinking beyond the present day need and stretching it into a possible future; foreseeing outcomes of situations and the ability to look at a problem or the organization from a conceptualizing perspective so that one goes beyond the day-to-day realities in order to bring visions to reality .

4. ETHICAL & PRINCIPLE CENTRED:
The basic step of Servant Leadership is helping others selflessly just for sake of helping, which involves self-sacrifice. Therefore a premium value is put on humility: ability to put one’s own accomplishment and talents in a proper perspective; As a result there is authenticity in expressing oneself in ways that are consistent with inner thought and feeling. A leader who follows this pathway creates trust and wellbeing at the workplace.

5. THE IDEAL TEAM ENVIORNMENT.
Servant leaders educate the members of their team through their words and actions, and they encourage their people to set aside self-serving behaviors in favor of serving others. Building team emphasizing that people networks are essential in a person’s personal professional and social life. In The Servant as Leader, Greenleaf writes, “There is something subtle communicated to one who is being served and led if, implicit in the contractt between the servant-leader and led is the understanding that the search for wholeness is something that they have.” The most important in decision making process are mutually acceptable decision through good understanding and the maturity of followers. In order that, the development of organization through servant leadership styles just the impact goals, the ultimate goals are the growth and follower’s maturity.

6. SHARED LEADERSHIP MANIFEST IN EMPATHY:
A distinct demonstration of the ability to understand and experience the feeling of others and accepting how and what they are ; recognizing their special and unique spirit. The servant leader must assume the good intentions of their co-workers and not reject them, even when forced to reject their behavior or performance.

7. EMPOWERS FOLLOWERS:
Entrusting powers to others involves effective listening, making people feel significant, putting emphasis on teamwork, valuing of love and humility. fostering proactive, self-confident attitude among followers and gives them a sense of personal power;

8. ACT AS SELFLESS MENTORS
The Value-for-People is manifest in commitment to the growth of people: nurturing the personal, professional, and spiritual growth & counseling of others; Servant leaders know that by helping to guide the people who work for them, they will help their employees learn vital skills that will both improve their performance, and improve them as people.

9. LISTENING & PERSUASION
First seek to understand and then wait to be understood is the mode of the Servant leadership. It is all about emphasizing the importance of communication and seeking to identify the will of the people; seeking to influence others relying on arguments not on positional power; Servant leaders really listen to their people, and they actively solicit their participation, their ideas, and their feedback. In time, they get to know the world-view of each one of their employees, and they tailor their leadership approach accordingly.

10. DEMONSTRATE CONSTANCY OF PURPOSE
Servant leaders realize that one or two conversations may not have the desired change in an employee's assumptions or mindset. So they are tenacious and invest whatever time it takes to educate and inspire servant leadership practices in the members of their team. Servant leadership focus on stability and evolutionary of the organization by the followers personal growth as the basic foundation. It will take a long time but it will be strong over the time to make the organization sustainability and stability. Time factor for servant leaders are not considered crucial because they stress collaboration and integrity in develop their organization.

11. TRUST WORTHY
Service Leaders benignly hold themselves and others accountable for their commitments. Servant leaders know that no one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes--including themselves. With that in mind, they push for high standards of performance, service quality, and alignment of values throughout the team, and they hold themselves and their people accountable for their performance.

CONCLUDING
This decade as seen an exponential growth of leadership theories; human resource management buzzwords and “business coaches” all over the place. Yet Robert Greenleaf’s message rings deep into your years because they are simple and stress authenticity. The core belief of the Servant Leader that the meta-cause (beyond your self) and the urge for service and faith in the goodness and ability of people are missing you cannot have managers who create followers better than themselves.

Thanks and regards,

Dr Wilfred Monteiro
